Did you know you can make French toast in the oven?! Simply prepare your French toast like you would for the stovetop, but instead, line them on a greased baking sheet and bake in the oven. It’s my go-to way to make French toast when I’m serving a crowd. All the classic French toast flavors without the fuss of standing in front of the stove making multiple batches.

If you’re a French toast lover like me, you’ll not only enjoy this oven French toast, but also this peanut butter banana French toast bake or this Instant Pot cinnamon French toast casserole (my personal favorite!).

Recipe Highlights

  • Does anyone else LOVE ordering French toast at restaurants, but hate making it at home? The process is messy, it takes a long time if you’re making multiple in a skillet, and you always end up with either too much egg mixture or too much bread. Cue: oven French toast!
  • I love making oven French toast when I’m cooking for the masses or need a hands-off breakfast that frees up my stovetop for bacon or breakfast sausage. It’s seriously so easy to make and the results taste just like normal French toast.
  • This oven French toast recipe works with any variety of bread as long as the slices are similar in thickness — this will ensure that your French toast cooks evenly in the oven.

Simple Variations

  • Bread: I used a whole grain, seedy bread for this recipe, but have also used this technique with challah, sourdough, bakery bread, white and wheat bread. You can pretty much use whatever bread you have on hand! Others have commented that they used Texas toast, cinnamon raisin bread, and farmhouse bread.
  • Add a sweetener: if you like things a bit sweeter, try adding maple syrup or honey to the egg mixture.

Time to Get Baking

For a crispier French toast, bake it at 375ºF! The higher baking temperature will allow the edges of the slices to get nice and crispy. You’ll bake for 8 minutes and then flip each slice. Then, place back into the oven, and bake for an additional 3-5 minutes (this timing will depend on your oven).

For a chewier French toast, bake at 350ºF! The lower baking temperature will allow your French toast to cook more slowly, creating chewier French toasty goodness. You’ll bake for 10 minutes and then flip each slice. Then, bake for an additional 4-6 minutes, depending on your oven.

Top, Serve and Enjoy!

Serve this oven-baked French toast with scrambled eggs, bacon or breakfast sausage to round out a hearty breakfast. And don’t forget the French toast toppings! I recommend any of the following:

  • Butter
  • Fresh berries
  • Greek yogurt
  • Jam
  • Maple syrup (of course!)
  • Nutella
  • Peanut butter

Storage Instructions

Let your French toast cool completely. Then, transfer into an airtight container and seal. Store in the fridge for up to 3-5 days.

Can You Freeze French Toast?

Yes! This oven French toast is a great breakfast to freeze for later:

  1. First, let French toast cool completely.
  2. Then, wrap with tin foil or place in a freezer safe bag. Remove as much air as possible and seal.
  3. Store in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices whole grain bread
  • 5 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened almond milk
  • ground cinnamon, to taste

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350ºF and generously spray a nonstick baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray. You can also line your baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  • Next, whisk eggs and almond milk together in a medium mixing bowl or Pyrex.
  • Carefully dip 1 slice of bread into the egg mixture. Make sure bread is fully submerged in the egg mixture. Let excess egg mixture drip from the bread and then place bread onto the baking sheet. Repeat until you have dipped all pieces of bread.

  • Then flip each piece of bread and bake for an additonal 4-6 minutes.* We suggest spraying the baking sheet as you flip, just to be safe!
  • Remove from the oven and serve with maple syrup.

Tips & Notes

  • *For a crispier French toast: bake at 375ºF for 8 minutes and then flip. Bake for an additional 3-5 minutes.
  • For a chewier French toast: bake at 350ºF for 10 minutes and then flip. Bake for an additional 4-6 minutes.
  • Make sure your baking sheet is thoroughly greased with butter or cooking spray to prevent the bread from sticking.

Who puts only 2 Tablespoons of milk in their French toast? Itโ€™s more like bread dipped in scrambled eggs. I added more milk. Mine did not brown well in the oven either. Not a fan of this recipe.

I put 1/2 cup of milk, cream or egg nog per 6 or 7 eggs. I also add a sprinkle of nutmeg and cinnamon. With this ratio I find that it browns nicely.

Delicious and easy. I used croissant bread (from Costco), and it was amazing! I love that I can make French toast on a sheet pan – enough to feed my teenage boys without me having to stand at the frying pan for a long time. I baked for 10 min on each side and then broiled one side for 2 min. Great combo of chewy and crispy. Thanks for a great recipe.

This is my favorite recipe! I do add extra almond milk. I buy the vanilla flavor kind. And I also use parchment paper. If you don’t have parchment, I recommend butter or spray oil on your cookie sheet/pan. Enjoy! ๐Ÿ˜‰

It’s me again. If you don’t like Cinnamon you may also like other flavors like Pumpkin Spice for the fall. Or even Apple Pie spice. I have made Coffee yes Coffee version of French Toast and its a great morning kick. I used Instant in warm milk and cool it in the fridge, and mix it in my eggs after 1 hr. Or you can also add flavor coffee creamer, if you’re allergic to cinnamon. Just be unique and spice it up. Don’t be afraid to make your own flavor French toast. I hope this helps you all! Enjoy! ๐Ÿ˜‰

If I have any egg mixture left I just cook it like scrambled eggs…or make more french toast.

I was excited to try this review this morning. I followed it exactly for the crispier version but it did not brown and stuck to bsking sheet. I needed to brown them in a skillet.
